MANUFACTURING
The high density polyethylene raw material utilized in Poly Lumber is derived from post-consumer bottle waste such as milk containers. This material is cleaned in a decontamination process to a purity level of over 99% HDPE. It is then compounded into rigid board stock material, the resulting finished product containing over 90% recycled post-consumer waste by weight.
Poly Lumber is manufactured in many dimensional lumber sizes, shapes and colors. Planks, rails, slats, tongue and groove, as well as specialty profiles are available. The product comes in many wood tones and popular colors. Because Poly Lumber is a recycled product, there can be slight variations in color. Custom colors can be produced on a large volume, commercial basis.
LIMITATIONS
This type of lumber product has less rigidity and greater elongation than wood lumber. Therefore, Poly Lumber is not recommended for use as a structural member. Examples of applications that are inappropriate would be load bearing walls, and floor joists.
When utilizing Poly Lumber for decking or flooring, you should be aware that this flooring product has a tendency for static electricity build up. Due to various degrees in individual jobs this may or may not be an issue for your specific project. The joists of the support frame should be spaced 12" on center. Uniform Building Code suggests that decking beams should deflect no more than 1/360th of the span of the frame in a uniform load. Therefore, when constructing a deck with 3/4" thick Poly Lumber material, joist spacing should be 12" on center. 1 1/2" thick material is utilized with 24" centers to meet this criteria.
INSTALLATION
The product will cut and drill very cleanly, as there is no grain to split or chip. It is not necessary to pre-drill the Poly Lumber when fastening; screws offer the best form of attachment; however, nails and staples may also be utilized in some applications. When installing your deck always follow our detailed installation guide, available from our office.
WARRANTY
Poly Lumber comes with a 25 year limited warranty. The product is warranted not to split, crack, or splinter during this period. The material will be replaced or the sale refunded if the product does not perform as stated. See us for specific limited warranty coverage.
